Torero's Authentic Mexican Cuisine

Impromptu date night. Of course we had to go for tacos. While we drove we opened the TacoMatt directory and landed on Torero's. A Cary staple since the 90s. Brooke is from Cary and confirmed that Torero's and Los Tres are the OG Mexican restaurants here.

Walked in and got seated immediately. This may be my favorite thing about Mexican restaurants. You can get in, order, eat, and leave in 30 minutes if you're trying. The quick service is great.

As we sat down there was a smoky smell in the air. I figured it was fajitas, but there was a hint of cigarette in it too. Maybe because back in the 90s you could smoke inside, and this place is also a sports bar. I'm going with yes.

On to the tacos. We asked our server what her favorite was and she said shrimp. I'm not a big shrimp guy, so I went with what looks like my new favorite taco. Birria. Love the simplicity. Love dunking it in the broth. What can I say.

Two minutes later (exaggerating) the tacos arrived. WOW they were presented great. Plates were huge. Right away we noticed a sauce on the shrimp tacos. Looked like literal shrimp sauce from a hibachi restaurant. Side note: I love shrimp sauce at hibachi restaurants.

First bites were great. Hot, good mix of flavor and ingredients. From there the experience stalled out a little. The generous portions of protein were awesome, but it started to drown out the rest of the taco. Speaking of drowning, the shrimp tacos had a lot of sauce on them. And a lot of shrimp. Not bad, but a little overwhelming. The birria tacos had a similar issue. Once a few bites caught all the onion and cilantro, the beef was all that was left. The flour tortillas were quite tasty though. Each taco, flour or corn, was double-layered. I like that, but it's a bit much.

Bang for the buck was excellent on portions and meat. But the sheer volume affected the overall flavor. 3.0 out of 5.

The chips and salsa were great. I think they make their own salsa. Unique flavor, better than standard table salsa. A little spicy, which I liked.

A Cary staple and an enjoyable date night in the books.
